RUGY’S GIRL CHILD/ OH MY LORD

Twenty odd years ago in Henveiru, woman was in agony waiting for the arrival of her newborn child. She’d already spent a good half a day at the maternity ward of the hospital, and had come home, it didn’t seem like it was going to happen any time soon that day.

She was walking about, hoping that it would decide to come out anytime soon, she was exhausted, and preferred to stay at home and rush back to the hospital when she knew it was for sure. The hospital air wasn’t really doing her much good. Just as she relaxed a bit and thought she’d have to wait a while it happened all so suddenly, the all too familiar pains. She’s done this twice before, and it always is as painful and infact the fear of it even more so than the first time she ever gave birth. Ignorance was surely bliss since, then it all came as a surprise. She's never prepared for the pain. Everytime it seemed worst than what she'd experienced before. Now that she's not new, she knows exactly the scale of what could happen and what could go wrong. She wasnt ready just yet. It surely cant happen now the fathers just nipped out side as well. It was too quick and it’s going to be too late by the time she reached the hospital. It needed to be done there and then. Women about the house frantically made preparations in the room. It was fortunate that a very well experienced midwife lived nearby. She was soon called in. The process had already begun by the time she'd arrived.

After what seemed like an eternity for the mother the child finally came out. The mother felt drained but waited for her newborn to be put in her arms, wanting to see it, hold it, touch it, this little creature, the small human being she’d carried in her womb for nine whole months. It was the expressions around her that puzzled her, she looked at her sister in law who was by her, she couldn’t read her face, and already felt weak and exhausted. She saw, tears rolling down peoples faces. Why cant she hear her child? why wasn’t it making any noises?

It wasn’t breathing, the umbilical chord, was coiled tight around the baby’s neck. Perhaps all the summersalts in the womb and the baby managed to twist itself around the chord. The chord, the lifeline, that connects the two lives, was trying to take out of it what it has given it for all this time. It was as if it was trying to mark the end to this relationship between the baby and the life supporting chord.

The frail and wise, old mid wife, with a whole life’s worth of experience behind her, was agitated and irritated by the weeps and the sniffs made by the other women in the room. Women! Sigh! if only they pulled themselves together at times like these. She wished that they’d stop howling. She quickly uncoiled the choking, umbilical cord off the baby, and couldn’t help but notice how big and heavy, a healthy child it was, this must have been partly the reason why its been wrapped so tight around its neck it must have grown while the chord was around it. She untwisted all of it, off of the baby and cut the umbilical chord. She held the heavy baby up, holding it upside down by its legs, she must have used all of the remaining strength in her life, raised her free hand up high and gave a good smack on its bottom. This was followed by a baby cry, a wail, a noise, it was alive. JOY TO THE WORLD! Happiness and relief and more tears of release, of the nasty fear all gone with the cry. The panic and the shock of seconds ago forgotten in an instance. The baby cleansed, and wrapped in blanket lay in the happy mothers arms. It looked beautiful. A big healthy baby girl.

..before both were rushed to the hospital for proper medical care. And it grew and grew and grew. (hama gahen hen huregen,)

Rugy's girl child Mo the bright, was born on Morys Day.
And man will live for evermore, because of Morys Day.
Long time ago in agony, so the wholely able said,
